It’s cool to be eco-friendly, but not everyone can afford a green roof or solar shingles for a Littleton roofing project. Fortunately, there are other environmentally-friendly materials that may be a great option for you.
Slate
Many old buildings across Europe are covered with slate shingles. In some parts of England, hand-carved slate is still used.
Advantages: Slate is a natural stone, so it does not pollute or burn and allows the roof to breathe. Such a roof saves heat energy (the roof will not lose heat; additionally, in the hot season, when temperatures rise too much, the slate does not contribute to overheating).
Ceramic tiles
If you are very ambitious, have a good supply of clay, an oven and enough fuel, you could make your own roof tiles. Advantages: The air spaces between the ceramic tiles maintain a good air circulation. Ceramic tiles are not toxic. Such a roof will last a very long time with minimal maintenance.
Metal shingles
A metal roof falls into the environmentally-friendly category, for at least two reasons:
- At the end of its life cycle, it is 100% recyclable.
- It is reflective, being recommended for houses in areas where the climate is warm, because it has the ability to improve the energy efficiency of the building.
